A city in constant evolution: frequented by the Etruscans, Greeks as well as the Romans. At the time of the Maritime Republic, it was the commercial heart of the federation. In the centuries to come, it was the victim of devastation and looting. On September 9, 1943, it was the backdrop for the landing of the Allied troops who liberated Italy, and in 1954 it was devastated by a disastrous flood. A tumultuous reconstruction followed which resulted in an exceptional fusion of old and new, that married the ancient city walls and fishing shacks with modern hotels, a beautiful promenade, gardens and fountains…
