Embellished with the title "Civis Romana ", in the Amalfitan alliance Scala had the role of acropolis, residence of the most ancient and noble coastal families , seat of nobility and in 987 (to 1818) also Bishop's seat . Commerce made her rich:130 Churches and 35-000 inhabitants .

          They were enterprising: founding Amalfi and Ravello and commercial ports in all of the Mediterranean; parting from his green valleys for Jerusalem Fra' Gerardo De Saxo : founded the great hospital with a 1000 beds, run by the warrior knights , the Ospedalieri di S.
