          The Ancient Pasitea, of mysterious origins: maybe Greek, and if so the name derives from Posa Tanos - sloping land; if Roman, from "Poridii" (from which Positano) at the epoch of Claudius, it is certain however that the first inhabitants come from the sea, and that it was destined to be a maritime town...

The wood was solid and the boats were fast, with valiant mariners, to the coast of Asia Minor, to Syria and Palestine, where ever there were precious spices there you would find the vessels of Positano....
This is why in the Amalfitan Alliance it was the seat of the "Naval School" and an efficient Naval Arsenal. Rich and powerful, in the local costumes, in the language and above all in the architecture more similar to Byzantium than to the Amalfi Coast.
The rival of Amalfi for the "Bussola" (naval compass), an invention Positano claimed to be of a favoured citizen Flavio Gioia and so they chose it for their standard, but Amalfi arrived first adding it to their communal emblem and therefore preventing the dangerous initiative...
The Royal house of Spain were enamoured of Positano and chose it as their Summer residence, they improved and beautified the town, which escaped the miserable destiny of the sister cities... Until in the XVIII century when the same fate befell them, poverty...

          A new dawn at the beginning of the XX century, the Russian exiles elected Positano their drawing room of letters by the sea: great literature, great ideas... and a great deal of drinking: Semenov on his death bed, left the people of Positano a rich inheritance to be spent until the last glass...

          The next appointment is with the 1950's; artists, writers and producers, fell under the spell of the atmosphere, the scenery and the life style of the fishermen, and began to restructure old houses and build villas, a golden refuge. The famous fashions: eccentric , a little exotic, taken up by enthusiastic Americans who became ambassadors in the World for Positano style. This was the time when between Capri and Positano the cream of the International Jet-set spent their Summers: and the "Dolce Vita" (the Sweet Life) and the "Young Lions" animated the long nights on the coast...

          The luxury tourism opened up a dream for everyone...
