Enter Piazza Cantilena and directly in front of us the Baroque triumph of the
BASILICA OF S.
TROFIMENA...
There are many arguments about the epoch of the construction, some give the VII century built to hold the Sacred Remains of S. Trofimena , others more than a century earlier dedicated to the SS.mo Crocifisso, and others who identify it as one of the many Basilicas built in Campania between the XI and XIII century , under the " Renovatio Desideriana" . Certainly it was restored in the Baroque era , and completely renewed in the XIX century:
Inside please note: some paintings on wooden panels of the XVI century , a number of Baroque paintings ; the bust of S.Trofimena in silver by Nicola
Avitabile, and over the high altar "La Crocifissione" from the work shop of Marco Pino da Siena.
Two narrow flights of steps lead to the crypt. It has three naves , a barrel vault and a small cupola
above the presbytery , on the marble altar the statue of S. Trofimena and a bas-relief dating from the end of XVIII century that represents the Saint asleep on a soft pillow. Behind the altar are the
sacred relics of the Saint , in an urn of alabaster dated 1722, work of
Ragozzino...
Leave the Cathedral along a corridor that opens beside the fourth chapel on the left where we find the Arch- Confraternity SS.mo Sacrament and the adjoining
CHURCH OF SS.mo
SACRAMENT...
In the assembly rooms one can admire the documents of the Order founded in the XVII century, and Vestments and Insignia used for the celebrations of Holy Week . These open with the Stations of the Cross on Maunday Thursday , a sad procession of hooded figures who in the roads of the town cover the stages of the capture and the Passion of Christ, to finish on Good Friday with the funeral procession that by torchlight flank the statue of Our Mother of Sorrows and accompany Her to the sepulchre of the Dead Christ...
The Church contains: a precious Trittico , at the centre a "Madonna and
Child", late thirteenth century , at the side" Saint James and Saint Andrew" of the XVI century, topped by a lunette with
" The Saviour between Saints Francis and Anthony"; the seventeenth century statue of S. Theodore and an unknown Saint ; on the altar an altar piece of 1618 , gift of Raimondo Carola, depicting the 2
"Madonna del Rosario adored by Saints Dominic, Catherine, Gennaro, Lucia, Sisto and Trofimena", all revered at Minori....
Leaving the assembly rooms, the side road D'Afflitto takes us on to Corso Vittorio Emanuele III, where there is an ancient votive shrine , straight ahead with an eye on the delightful small shops that line the road, we arrive at the Monastery and the pretty small
Church of S. Maria, little more than a chapel , for moments of solitary prayer...
